CT Scan

A CT scan is a computerized X-ray that can be performed on all parts of the body. During the procedure, X-ray beams and detectors rotate around you while the exam table moves, allowing a computer to create two-dimensional cross-section images of your body. CT scans of internal organs, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity than conventional x-rays.

Most CT scans require an injection of contrast material. An IV is started by the technologist at scan time. As the contrast travels throughout your body, you may feel a warm sensation or have a metallic taste in your mouth. These feelings will pass quickly. This procedure lasts approximately 15-30 minutes.

To prepare for your exam:

  • All patients having contrast administered with their scan must not eat 4 hours prior to exam.
  • If an abdominal or pelvic study is ordered, you will also need to take oral contrast (EZ CAT) as directed prior to your scan. EZ CAT is obtained through your physician’s office or at ClearView Imaging.
  • Do not wear clothing with metal zippers, buttons, or snaps.
  • Bring all prior CT, X-ray, MRI reports that are pertinent to the scan.

Patient preparations for a CT scan may vary so please alert our staff and your physician to the following:

  • Do you have a history of asthma?
  • Do you have severe allergies?
  • Have you had a prior reaction to contrast material?

If you have answered “YES” to any of these questions, you may be required to take a steroid prep as directed. This prep will be supplied by your physician or can be obtained at ClearView Imaging.

Also, alert our staff if:

  • You have renal disease or have had kidney surgery such as a nephrectomy (removal of a kidney). If so, a simple blood test may need to be done prior to your appointment to verify kidney function.
  • You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
  • You are diabetic
  • If you are taking the following medications:
    • Metformin
    • Avandamet
    • Glucophage
    • Riomet
    • Metaglip
    • Fortamet
    • Glybridue/Metformin combo

Please do not take these medications 24 hours before and 48 hours after a CT scan with contrast.
